Strong acceleration of pure electric vehicles in May: over 10,700 units registered

Electric mobility continues to gather speed in Spain. During the month of May 2025, pure electric vehicles (100% electric) recorded a remarkable growth of 78.6%, reaching 10,722 registered units, according to data published by AEDIVE and GANVAM. This momentum translates into solid progress for the year-to-date figures, with 43,183 units registered so far, representing a 63.1% year-on-year growth.
Electric passenger cars lead the growth
The driving force behind this progress has undoubtedly been the pure electric passenger car segment, which experienced a spectacular rise of +102.6% in May, with 9,168 new registrations. In the year-to-date aggregate for the first five months of the year, the figures are equally compelling: 35,905 units, representing an increase of +77.9% compared to the same period in 2024.
This positive evolution is backed by several key drivers:
- Economic bonuses linked to energy savings certificates, resulting from agreements between manufacturers and power companies.
- Compatibility with the MOVES Plan and tax benefits, such as the 15% personal income tax deduction (IRPF).
- A wider range of available models alongside improvements in range and charging times.
Electric vans: a step forward
Pure electric vans also showed positive, though more moderate, performance. In May, 542 units were registered, representing a +20.7% increase, while the year-to-date figure rises to 2,813 units, with a +30% growth so far this year.
This upturn confirms the consolidation of electrification in transport within light commercial fleets, which is key to achieving zero-emission urban goods distribution.
Upward trend and positive outlook
These results reinforce the rising trend of pure electric vehicles in Spain and cement their leading role in the transition toward more sustainable mobility. At this pace, sector organizations estimate that 2025 will close with nearly 200,000 electrified vehicle registrations, marking a new milestone in the decarbonization of the Spanish vehicle fleet.
The charging infrastructure network, a key element to sustain this upward trend
To sustain the strong growth of electric mobility, it is essential that municipalities and companies continue to invest in smart charging infrastructure projects, with strategic locations that effectively respond to the growing demand for electric vehicles. This planning must account for a key reality: more than 70% of vehicles in Spain are parked on the street, making it imperative to deploy accessible, public, and well-distributed charging points in residential, commercial, and high-traffic areas.
