{"id":34137,"date":"2024-12-10T14:05:34","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T14:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/etecnic.bisiestodeveloper.es\/sin-categoria\/report-on-electric-mobility-in-spain\/"},"modified":"2026-10-19T11:35:43","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T11:35:43","slug":"report-on-electric-mobility-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etecnic.bisiestodeveloper.es\/en\/news\/report-on-electric-mobility-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"Report on electric mobility in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the transition towards electric vehicles, many people are currently wondering: <strong>what is the current status of electric mobility in Spain?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To answer this question, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obsbusiness.school\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OBS Business School<\/a> has presented the <strong>IV Report on Electric Mobility 2024<\/strong>, led by <strong>May L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, professor and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movilidadsostenible.com.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Empresas por la Movilidad Sostenible platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This report analyzes not only the current situation but also whether the progress made so far will be sufficient for Spain to meet the expected forecasts for 2030. We analyze it below.<\/p>\n<h2>IV Report on Electric Mobility 2024 (First Semestre): Results<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>IV Report on Electric Mobility 2024 with May L\u00f3pez<\/strong> at the forefront analyzes whether recent advancements are enough for Spain to reach its goals. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>540,000 plug-in electric vehicles by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>5.5 million electric vehicles by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>Having sufficient public road <a href=\"https:\/\/etecnic.bisiestodeveloper.es\/en\/sectors\/companies\/development-of-charging-infrastructure-for-electric-vehicles-strategies-for-smes-and-large-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infrastructure<\/a> to serve 30 million zero-emission cars and 80,000 trucks in Europe by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Percentage of plug-in vehicles in Spain in 2024<\/h3>\n<p>During <strong>the first semester of 2024<\/strong>, registrations of fully electric cars in Europe grew by a modest <strong>1.3%<\/strong> (712,637 units), while plug-in hybrids decreased by 2.5% (392,284 units sold). Today, these vehicles represent only <strong>3% of the EU car fleet and 1.4% in Spain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Objectives set for 2030: How are we doing?<\/h3>\n<p>If we analyze the data collected in the IV Report on Electric Mobility 2024, we see that Spain is close to meeting <strong>99% of the target of 540,000<\/strong> <strong>electric vehicles for 2025<\/strong>. But watch out, because this only represents 10% of the 5.5 million expected for the year 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madrid is the highest contributing region<\/strong>, followed by Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the Basque Country. On the other hand, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, Castile and Le\u00f3n, and Galicia lag at the tail end.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding charging point infrastructure, at the close of the first semester of 2024, we see that there are slightly <strong>more than 34,000 public charging points<\/strong> operational in Spain. However, despite these important advancements over the last year\u2014as we will see in the next point\u2014Spain is far from having the <strong>340,000 public charging points expected for the year 2030<\/strong>. Although there are still years ahead.<\/p>\n<h3>Is the public charging infrastructure sufficient in Spain?<\/h3>\n<p>Some people still hesitate to switch to an electric vehicle because they claim Spain lacks sufficient charging infrastructure. Is this true? What does the report data say?<\/p>\n<p>Today, the public charging infrastructure in Spain is adequate to serve the electric cars currently on the road, since <strong>only 6.31% of its capacity is used<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/aedive.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEDIVE<\/a>. However, there are shortcomings that are important to note, such as the <strong>lack of charging stations in <a href=\"https:\/\/etecnic.bisiestodeveloper.es\/actualidad\/es-posible-la-movilidad-sostenible-en-el-mundo-rural\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rural areas<\/a> and the low power capacity<\/strong> for recharging heavy-duty vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In the year 2023, almost 1\/3 of the public charging points in Spain were installed, with an <strong>average of 15 electric vehicles per public charger<\/strong>, significantly improving numbers compared to the previous year (20 vehicles per charger).<\/p>\n<p>The autonomous communities with the highest number of vehicles per charging point are Madrid, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands. Meanwhile, the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragon, La Rioja, and Asturias have the best ratio of chargers per vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The average power capacity per vehicle also improved last year, reaching <strong>1.4 kW<\/strong> <strong>in 2023<\/strong> and exceeding the European average of 1.2 kW. However, it remains far behind the Chinese average, where there are 8 electric vehicles per public charger and a power capacity of 3.46 kW.<\/p>\n<p>Operators state that setting up a charging station can take between <strong>24 and 36 months<\/strong>, a much longer process in Spain compared to other countries like France, Belgium, or Italy, where deadlines are significantly shorter.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of full interoperability across the public charging network in Spain is also questioned, which makes <strong>charging costs higher<\/strong> than in other European countries, despite energy costs being lower in Spain.<\/p>\n<h3>Price difference of electric vehicles between Europe, the US, and China<\/h3>\n<p>Is the price of electric vehicles an obstacle? If we take a look at the data collected in the report, we see that in China, <strong>more than 60%<\/strong> of the electric cars sold in 2023 were <strong>more affordable<\/strong> than their equivalent internal combustion engine models.<\/p>\n<p>However, the situation changes in Europe and the United States, given that in these countries electric cars are <strong>between 10% and 50% more expensive<\/strong>. The good news is that <strong>the price gap is beginning to narrow<\/strong> due to a decrease in the operating and maintenance costs of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>To facilitate purchases, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/doc.php?id=BOE-A-2023-15135\">Real Decreto-ley 5\/2023<\/a><\/strong> introduced deductions in personal income tax (IRPF) and other grants such as the MOVES program and PERTE VEC. A new framework was also incorporated within the Energy Saving Certificates (CAE), which could generate <strong>an additional 28.5 million euros in subsidies for the fleet sold in 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is important to implement a series of measures to boost electric mobility in Spain, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Streamlining procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Offering <strong>non-taxable direct grants<\/strong> linked to sustainability.<\/li>\n<li>Creating support lines for industrial vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>Adjusting subsidy distribution according to the registration of transport companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand, factors like competition between electric vehicle manufacturers, lower battery prices, and the arrival of Chinese electric vehicles are making these types of vehicles <strong>increasingly accessible to the general population<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, caution is advised because the <strong>possible imposition of tariffs on Chinese cars in Europe<\/strong> and the gradual phasing out of incentives in certain countries could halt or slow down this trend. In spite of everything, the future lies in the transition toward electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<h3>Passenger plug-in car sales surpass diesel for the first time in Spain<\/h3>\n<p>One of the major updates is that <strong>in the first half of 2024<\/strong>, sales of plug-in cars surpassed diesel cars for the first time in Spain. Likewise, it is expected that 17 million electric vehicles will be sold worldwide throughout 2024, concentrated in China (45%), Europe (25%), and the United States (11%).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/etecnic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Caratula-BLOG-etecnic-10.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Is battery range an obstacle?<\/h3>\n<p>Recent advancements have contributed to improving the efficiency of electric car batteries, allowing users to enjoy <strong>more range and faster charging times<\/strong>. On the other hand, having a proper charging network helps ensure that future electric car owners do not have to worry about range.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, <strong>SUVs<\/strong> remain the top-selling vehicle type in both Europe and Spain, accounting for 59% of registered cars in 2023. These vehicle models, being larger, require <strong>batteries that are 25% larger than a medium-sized electric car with the same range.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is simply a matter of time until electric vehicle range improves, which will eventually convince hesitant consumers to migrate toward these options.<\/p>\n<h2>Advantages of Electric Mobility<\/h2>\n<p>The transition to electric mobility in Spain is necessary due to its multiple benefits, including:<\/p>\n<h3>Improves air quality<\/h3>\n<p>May L\u00f3pez stated: \u201c<strong>Air quality improves as we integrate more responsible transport habits.<\/strong> According to the collected data, the shift to sustainable mobility has resulted in a significant 6% reduction in nitrogen oxides and a -14.5% decrease in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Spain, confirming that air quality indices are starting to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Improves quality of life and health<\/h3>\n<p>If air quality improves, people&#8217;s quality of life and general health improve as well, especially in large cities. It is a way to fight pollution and the carbon footprint, which is one of the main problems of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<h3>It is important in the fight against climate change<\/h3>\n<p>The migration toward sustainable mobility is fundamental in the fight against climate change. Its adoption allows us to take action to reduce the carbon footprint and strive for a more sustainable and respectful planet, which requires a change in electric mobility in Spain.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusions<\/h3>\n<p>Although the data collected in the IV Report on Electric Mobility for the first semester of 2024 is positive, <strong>there is still a lot left to do<\/strong>. The shift toward electric vehicles is a reality, and it is important that these figures improve as the years pass to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdsocialesa2030.gob.es\/agenda2030\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">objectives established in Agenda 2030.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the transition towards electric vehicles, many people are currently wondering: what is the current status of electric mobility in Spain?
